Eating well and health

It is said that human beings are naturally vegetarians. This can be argued from the fact that the length of the intestines of a man is longer when compared to that of a dog which is naturally carnivorous. The logic behind this assertion is based on how fast meat spoils, hence it must be quickly digested and eliminated. The shorter intestines of a dog and similar meat-eating animals are designed to extract the nutrients of the meat very efficiently in a short amount of time. The intestines of a human being on the other hand is much longer which means that food stays longer in the gut. Food that easily spoils, like meat for instance can cause various disorders because of the factor of spoiling. Vegetables and fruits on the other hand, do not easily spoil like meat and can stay in the gut for much longer time giving the intestines ample time to extract the nutrients more effifiently.

It is a well-known fact that colon cancer is one of the big problems plaguing the digestive system. This problem is exacerbated by the deficiency of fiber in the diet. Meat is very low on fiber while fruits and vegetables have fiber in large quantities.Fiber allows for much more efficient waste disposal as it sweeps the colon and cleans it more efficiently. Fruits and vegetables are also rich in enzymes which is needed by the body for digestion as well as to kill harmful bacteria. Fruits like mango and banana are rich in enzymes so with green vegetables.

Modern diet typically consists of lots of red meat and lard. Fat, while very important for health is easily stored when taken in large quantities. Excessive intake of fatty foods especially when fried is one of the basic causes of many diseases that threaten the health of many people not the least of which is a tendency to obesity. The increasing popularity of junk food is also a contributing factor to improper nutrition.

Sweet slumber

Sleep is wonderful. Sleep heals. When one feels intense pain as when one is being tortured, sleep often comes to the rescue and all feeliings and sensations cease. When a man dies and all his senses start to leave his body, sleep stays in the body and is the last to leave. That is what the wise man said and I think he may be right. When one is tortured by doubt and pain, one seeks the embrace of oblivion, taking refuge in alcohol or sleeping pills with certain disastrous results. Escaping one form of suffering only drives one to another which could be far worse than the first.

Sleep is one of Nature's many wonderful inventions and often taken for granted. I used to be bothered by a deadly sleeping disorder which is characterized by immobility and is known to lead to death by pancreatitis. I would be dreaming and conscsious of it as a dream and I would be unable to move. This type of disorder is quite common in the Philippines and is called urom in Visayan; many deaths have been attributed to this. One would be seemingly frozen and in a state of total immobility while fully conscious and even seing people as they come in the room. Being prone to this disorder, I was taught to wiggle my toes and fingers when it starts to happen and keep doing it until I regained control of my hands and legs. This itype of disorder often strikes the rice-eating people of Asia especially when one goes to sleep immediately after eating.. A solution has been offered which is to drink plenty of water before sleeping; then one might possibly escape from this malady.
